Vehicle Detection in Intelligent Transport Systems

​The vehicle detection process plays a crucial role in the success of intelligent transport management system solutions. There are various methods to detect vehicles, ranging from hose-style detection to ultrasonic and inductive loop technologies. For applications like traffic control or drive-thru systems, inductive loop technology is the most reliable option, without exception.

Inductive Loop Vehicle Detection

​An inductive loop vehicle detection system consists of three main components: a loop (either preformed or saw-cut), a loop extension cable, and a detector. The loop is embedded in the traffic lane and is a continuous wire circuit that enters and exits at the same point. The ends of the loop wire are connected to the loop extension cable, which then connects to the vehicle detector.

​Once the detector senses a vehicle, it sends a signal to the central controller system. Depending on the pathway settings of each gate, the system will adjust the counter by increasing or decreasing it. The system also records the gate number and automatically opens the boom barrier as needed.

​The ability to detect vehicles is a key feature of intelligent transport management systems, enabling the collection of critical data such as traffic intensity and vehicle speed.

This project involved the design and development of mechanical components as well as instrumentation for data acquisition, throttle control, and monitoring. The scope of work, as outlined in the specification, can be categorized as follows:

Cradle-Mounted Instruments:

• DAQ: Data Acquisition System

• SCCB: Signal Conditioning and Control Board

GCU (Ground Control Unit):

• Computer: Used for logging and plotting data

• ECP: Engine Control Panel

The system will acquire analog signals from five different sensors, each with varying output voltage standards, as follows:

• Thrust (Load Cell): Measures the thrust generated (0–1000 N).

​

• Engine RPM Sensor: Measures the propeller's rotation rate (0–10,000 RPM).

​

• Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor: Measures the exhaust gas temperature (0–300°C).

​

• Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor: Measures the engine cylinder head temperature (0–300°C).

​

• Fuel Flow Rate Sensor: Measures the fuel flow rate in the fuel lines, up to 50 LPH (liters per hour).

Product Functionality and Features:

​

• User-Friendly GUI: The system features an intuitive Graphical User Interface (GUI) designed for easy monitoring of sensor data. It allows users to view sensor outputs in desired formats, making data interpretation more efficient.

• Parametric Performance Measurement: This system is developed specifically for performance measurement of an ignition-controlled throttle system, primarily used in defense applications. It accurately captures and logs the parametric data needed for system performance analysis.

• Sensor Data Monitoring: The system monitors multiple sensors simultaneously, providing real-time feedback on key performance metrics. The GUI makes it easy to navigate through various data points, including engine performance, ignition, and throttle metrics.

• Defense Application: Designed for military-grade use, the system's focus is on precision and reliability. It caters to specific defense requirements for testing and controlling ignition-based throttle systems.

• Successful Installation and Testing: After development, the system underwent rigorous testing to ensure functionality and reliability. It has been successfully installed and is in active use, demonstrating its performance in real-world defense applications.
